Burial At Sea

The sea hibiscus (Talipariti tiliaceum), or purau as it is known in Tahiti, is widely distributed throughout Oceania. It occurs up to heights of 800m a.s.l. but reaches its highest densities along rivers and beaches. Every day at dusk, the purau trees shed their flowers, which float on the water surface. The current then carries them out to sea, to their final resting place.
