Newts are amazing and fascinating creatures. End of February it was extraordinary cold and the pond was covered with thick ice. After a few warm days the ice was hardly gone and I spotted the first Smooth Newts (Triturus vulgaris) in the pond. These guys are survivors, because a few days later winter came back an the pond froze over again. A few years ago I photographed this beautiful male searching for a prospective bride in his best dress.
