A Merlin, no, not the mythical magician in western culture. But a hawk, which lives in open and semi-open landscapes of the northern Holarctic. This bird, a female, was on draft.
The german name Merlin (Falco columbarius) is derived from the middle high german Smirlin or the latin term Smerillus, which means small falcon.

Ein Merlin, nein nicht der mythische Zauberer des westlichen Kulturkreises. Sondern ein Falke, welcher offene und halboffene Landschaften in weiten Teilen der nördlichen Holarktis bewohnt. Dieser Vogel, ein Weibchen, befand sich auf Durchzug.
Die deutsche Bezeichnung Merlin (Falco columbarius) leitet sich aus dem mittelhochdeutschen Smirlin oder dem lateinischen Begriff Smerillus ab, was soviel wie Zwergfalke bedeutet.
