Moonlight Giant

Luckily 2020 is a good year for the European Stag Beetle in our region. This giant among the family of beetles is listed in the IUCN red list as an endangered species and spends most of its life as a larvae in rotting wood. The impressive males with their enlarged mandibles fly mostly from late evening to nightfall in search for females to mate. Adult beetles live only for a few weeks. Very rare in the last years I could spot them on several places this year.
